Before BENGHAZI, There was EXTORTION 17 ...
August 06, 2011, 2:20 a.m.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌÕOperation Lefty Grove is underway, a highly dangerous mission to take out another high-level Taliban operative, three months after the death of Osama bin Laden. In the dark of night, 25 U.S. Special Ops Forces and a five-man flight crew board Extortion 17, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Seven unidentified Afghan commandos are allowed to join them. Ground forces have already been engaged in a three-hour exhaustive battle. Extortion 17ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs specially trained warriors drop into the Hot Landing Zone to help their fellow warriors. But thereÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs a problem: The standard chopper escorts have all been directed elsewhere. Mission directions are unclear. Worse, pre-assault fire to cover the Chinook transporting our brave fighting men is not ordered. On that fateful night, Extortion 17 will never touch down.
Taliban fighters fire three rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) in rapid succession. The first RPG shoots below the Chinook, but the second makes contact in what the military would later describe as a ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«one-in-a-million shot.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ The shot strikes a rotor blade on the aft (rear) pylon, shearing off 10 1/2 feet of the blade. The third shot flies above the falling chopper. Within a matter of seconds, the chopper begins to spin violently out of control and then drops vertically into a dry creek bed and is engulfed in a large fireball. There are no survivors.
The 30 brave Americans lost that night were more than just warriors. They were husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. Billy VaughnÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs son, Aaron Carson Vaughn, was one of them. Over the next few months, as unsettling information on the tragic incident was released to the families, Billy Vaughn became increasingly disturbed. Vaughn discovered that U.S. military forces are not being led to win battles, but have been sent on a foolÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs errand to ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«win the hearts and mindsÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ of other nations. He was told that the U.S. Rules of Engagement had prevented our brave defenders from defending themselves.
Adding insult to injury, Vaughn learned that a Muslim imam was invited by our own U.S. military leaders to ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«prayÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ over his sonÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs dead body. And, as U.S. war heroes lay in their caskets before their last flight home, the imam damned AmericaÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs fallen warriors as ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«infidelsÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ who would burn in hell: ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«Companions of the fire, the sinners and the infidels who are fodder for hell fire,ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ the imam solemnly intoned over their bodies ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å but in Arabic ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å not English ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å of course.
As U.S. military leaders observed the ceremony at Bagram Air Base, the imam boasted over the deaths of U.S. heroes with words such as, ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«The companions of heaven [Muslims] are the winners.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ "Betrayed" is a heart-rending account in AmericaÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs history, an engaging story of faith, patriotism, honor, duty and loss. "Betrayed" is not just the biography of an American military family, it is a crucial, true-life narrative that all Americans must read and understand about their government and the danger AmericaÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs military strategy currently poses to all families. "Betrayed" is a book Billy Vaughn wishes he didnÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇt have to write. But his son is gone and there are still unanswered questions. He needs to know if the American public finding out the truth may prevent another father from having to stand in his shoes.
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«Betrayed is a must read for those who wish to restore ClausewitzÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs trinity and ensure that future administrations and military leadership places the safety and well being of our warriors first and foremost.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Lt. Col. Allen B. West, U.S. Army, retired, and former member of Congress
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«This book is a must-read for anyone who is getting uneasy about the condition of our military. Billy Vaughn exposes startling revelations as the loss of the brave warriors on board Extortion 17 expands into larger cover-ups. Questions remain and the surviving families deserve answersÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌÕas does the nation!ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney, retired, U.S. Air Force
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇBetrayedÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ is a book that deserves national attention. It is high time it was written. ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ__ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌ¥BetrayedÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ examines that possibility in detail, and if it causes an in-depth investigation to be conducted into the entire affair, then Billy Vaughn will have fulfilled his duty to his warrior son, Aaron. Well done, Billy.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Capt. Larry Bailey, (SEAL), retired, U.S. Navy
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«When our government and media make our most covert warfighters a public spectacle, putting the operators, their families and the SpecOp Community in clear and present danger, we must ask ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌ¥why?ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ, figure out what went wrong, hold people responsible and make sure it does not happen again. Simple. ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ__ The bodies of American military men (my friends) were damned by an Islamic Imam at an official Ramp Ceremony at the Bagram Airfield, all allowed by US officials. This is pure sacrilege. We the People need to hold our government accountable and the families of the fallen particularly deserve a coherent explanation.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Ben Smith, (former SEAL), U.S. Navy
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«Like a flame-tipped lance, ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌ¥BetrayedÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ takes aim at the lies and secrecy of a government no longer true to the American people ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å not even to the families whose sons have paid the ultimate price. What are they hiding? ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌ¥BetrayedÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ forces the all-important question forward, past the silence and cover-up, to ensure that we all have the tools we need to get to the truth.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Diana West, syndicated columnist and author of ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our NationÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇs CharacterÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´
ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_Ì´å«Betrayed is a book that must be read. It is the story of American heroes and how America let them down. ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ__ We need to know the truth so we can reassert a national policy based on core American principles. ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎÌ¥BetrayedÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´åÇ begins that critical process.ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎÌ_ÌÎå´ ÌÎÌ_ÌÎ_ÌÎå«Ì´å Clare Lopez, senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy
About the Author
Billy Vaughn is the father of Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Carson Vaughn (DEVGRU), was one of America's most elite warriors. As Vaughn and his wife Karen began searching for answers, their eyes were opened to vile atrocities being played out on America's military. They quickly came face-to-face with their worst nightmare: The downing of Extortion 17 was at best unnecessary and at worst a negligent, reckless loss of life. As a public speaker, Vaughan now takes his message in person to the American public: Our boys shouldn't have died that night.
